OMA WORKSHOPS

The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) hosts a series of workshops to provide in-depth insights and practical guidance on implementing LwM2M standards in various sectors, including utilities and smart cities. These workshops offer an opportunity to learn from industry experts, explore real-world use cases, and get updates on the latest developments in IoT standardization.

LwM2M Water Interoperability Readiness Workshop

Held Tuesday 13 October 2026 · Fully remote
Open session 08:00–09:30 CEST
Members-only session 10:00–12:10 CEST

Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Water utilities from Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom and France joined the OMA Utility Working Group to discuss what is still holding back smart water metering at scale, and what an open, vendor-neutral standard needs to solve. Together, the panelists manage several million smart meters across NB-IoT, LoRaWAN and legacy drive-by technologies. The session closed with an update on the Water 2.0 LwM2M conformance profile and its path to a first release in March 2027.

Key takeaways

What utilities told us

  • Multi-vendor is a must. Utilities want to avoid single-supplier dependence. Resilience requires redundancy, and no single radio technology fits every environment.
  • Meters must be managed for 15–20 years. Firmware updates over the air, predictable battery life, long-term security updates and network sunsets all have to be planned for from day one.
  • Standardize what operations depend on. Priorities are consistent meter identity, operational data such as battery and signal strength, alarms or the raw data behind them, and backfill of missed readings.
  • Integration is the hidden cost. Data flows between vendor head-ends, MDM, asset and billing systems are fragile. Standardized, testable integration would reduce risk.
  • Interoperability builds customer trust. Every customer should get the same data quality and alerts, whichever meter is installed.

Where Water 2.0 goes next

  • A common minimum dataset. The working group will define mandatory readings and alarm classes with consistent meaning across manufacturers, while keeping room for optional features and vendor innovation.
  • Reliable timestamps. Time synchronization was confirmed as a core interoperability requirement for hourly reporting and network balancing.
  • Configurable alarms. Alarm thresholds and reporting schedules will remain configurable, with urgent events such as bursts reported immediately.
  • Better battery insight. The group will work on standardized indicators for battery condition and remaining lifetime, going beyond voltage alone.
  • Technology-neutral by design. The profile is intended to work across communication technologies, starting with LwM2M-native meters over NB-IoT and other LPWA networks.
  • First implementation shown. A proof-of-concept implementation of the profile was demonstrated to validate the technical framework early.
  • Utilities shape the requirements. Utility feedback is now being collected to finalize the first specification baseline, ahead of the planned March 2027 release.

Please note: this is not a formal interoperability test event. No implementations are tested and no conformance results are issued. The session reviews the Enabler Test Specification and agrees what the working group will test and validate in the events that follow.
